The white is just a means of exposing other elements. White enables other things to become visible.

What Lies Beneath, encaustic sculpture from artist-made Kozo paper, on birch panel, 2021, 26 x 50 x 5 inches
It’s the movement in Susol’s work that creates a visual journey, the paper seemingly transforming with the light that changes with one’s changing physical perspective. The changing tones are actually light and shadow reflecting for the viewer. Play the video above to fully experience the artwork.
The Glacier Series
The Glacier Series is a body of work that was inspired by my participation in a group exhibition at the Museum of Northwest Art, focusing on climate change and its effects on coastal communities.
The Dendrite Series
Dendrite means any of several parts branching from the body of a neuron that receive and transmit nerve impulses.
A mineral that has a branching crystal pattern. Dendrites often form within or on the surface of other minerals and often consist of manganese oxides.
The work seems to emit an energy that sends out impulses. I felt by the subtle lines showing movement on the paper it would invite the viewer to look closely and experience a deeper connection with the work. The paper has had this relationship to it’s roots and other plants in the earth while it was growing as a mulberry bush. Now I feel that it reached out to me and asked me to enhance the energy. Once again showing how connected we all are in every moment if we only take the time to look deep inside.
